Learning Objectives for a Course on Software Architecture

Many universities have started to offer a course on the emerging discipline of Software Architecture at either graduate or undergraduate levels. As a result, educators are facing many challenges with respect to which topics to be included in a course on Software Architecture and for which architectural abilities students should be trained and assessed. One way of addressing these challenges is to clearly specify learning objectives for a course on Software Architecture. In this paper, we present a set of learning objectives and its classification using Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT). The analysis brings out the generic cognitive skills required for architecture modeling. One of the potential benefits of classification of learning objectives is that different educational processes such as instruction, learning and assessment can be effectively aligned using the classification of learning objectives presented in the paper.
